Sulphur Testing Methods in SCPW | Clouding Point Testing Method

The determination of Sulphur in SCPW by KSCN, solution titration using AgNo3. And Clouding Point Testing Method to emulsifier.

Apparatus

  • 500ml Iodine Flask.
  • Burette 50ml.
  • Magnet Stirrer.
  • Pipette 50ml,20ml.

Reagents

1.0  Silver Nitrate 0.1N

2.0  Sodium Meth oxide solution

3.0 KSCN Normality of –48gm in 100ml

4.0  Acetone Alcohol

5.0 Nitric Acid Pure

6.0 Alum Indicator

Mega-net Stir and Titration

Procedure 

Take 2gm Sample SCPW to add 100ml Acetone alcohol mix with SCPW properly and stir. 

After adding 50 ml of NaOCH 3 mix properly and stir 5 main. 

After adding DM water 50 ml starting 5min. After adding simultaneously 20 ml HNO3 and 50 ml AgNo3 and adding indicator ferric alum 5 to 10 drops.

Titrate the above mixture against KSCN Solution. The endpoint is the disappearance of light pink and takes a final reading.

DETERMINATION OF THE CLOUD POINT OF AN EMULSIFIER 

Cloud point is the temperature at which wax (Bees wax) begins to separate when oil is chilled to a low temperature, and it serves as an important indicator of practical performance in automotive applications in low temperatures.

APPARATUS

a). 250 ml glass beaker.

b). Hot plate.

c). Thermometer

CLOUD POINT OF AN EMULSIFIER

Cloud point testing Procedure

a). Make a 10% sodium chloride solution in distilled water.

b). Dissolve 1 gm emulsifier sample in 99 gms. of 10% NaCl solution in a 250-ml beaker and gradually heat the beaker on a hot plate till it becomes cloudy. Note this temperature.

c). Again note the temperature at which the solution becomes clear on cooling. Both the temperatures should be identical. Cloud= °C
